HOW TO SET YOUR USER INTERFACE
USING EXPLORER NAVIGATION

When you were granted access to WebSite Director (WSD), your User Interface settings were established by your system's default User Preferences. These settings also include the WYSIWYG editor in addition to other display options.

Your User Preferences screen allows you to change these settings in addition to accessing your Edit User Info and Change Password screens.

This document provides the following instructions and examples for setting your User Interface options (located in the top section of your User Preferences screen):

  • Change from Browser to Explorer Navigation (if you are currently using Browser Navigation)
  • Buttons On: Left or Right
  • Background Fill: Stripe or Block
  • Windows: Single or Multiple
  • Buttons: Image or HTML
  • Return/Cancel: JavaScript or HTML
  • Show: Menus and/or Toolbar
  • Screen Colors
  • Save User Preferences Changes

Change from Browser to Explorer Navigation

If you are currently using Browser Navigation and wish to change to Explorer, complete the following steps:

1.  Log on to WebSite Director (WSD) using your WSD User Name and Password. The Application Desktop displays.

2.  Click  to display your User Preferences screen. The top portion of this screen is used to make changes to your User Interface.

3.  To use Explorer Navigation with the Explorer Masthead and Java Menus, click the radio buttons by Explorer for Masthead and Navigation. You may select Java or None for Menus .

4.  Then click    at the top of the User Preferences screen. The Save Preferences confirmation screen displays.

5.  Click OK to return to the Application Desktop.

    • If you selected Menus= Java, the Application Desktop masthead displays with three toolbars from which you may select actions and functions.
    • If you selected Menus= None, the Application Desktop does not provide any java-based menu navigation. Specific navigation aids will depend on settings for Masthead and Navigation. WSD displays one set of action icons as well as a list of  workflow stages with icons for selecting functions within each stage.

To make additional changes to the appearance of your Application Desktop and function screens, click the User Preferences icon  at the top of the Application Desktop or function screen. The remaining User Interface options are discussed below.

Buttons on: Left Side or Right Side  --  You can change the location of the selection buttons on the WSD function screens from the Left Side to the Right side.

Background Fill: Stripe or Block  --  When Explorer Navigation is selected, this option is automatically set to “Block” and may not be changed.

Windows: Single or Multiple  --  You can select how WSD displays function screens -- Single or Multiple.

  • Single - WSD displays function screens within a single browser thread or window. Using this setting, you will not be able to work on more than one function at a time. The figure on the left shows the Edit Request screen when Edit Request is selected from the Application Desktop.
  • Multiple  - With this setting, WSD opens multiple browser windows, one per function thread, allowing you to work on many different WSD functions at the same time. The figure on the right shows the Edit Request screen along with a new Submit New Request screen when each has been selected from the Application Desktop.

Buttons: Image or HTML  -- This setting allows you to specify whether WSD should use .gif images (default) for the selection buttons, or HTML. This will not visibly change the selection buttons nor will it impact your ability to access functions. You should use an HTML setting if a slow network/Internet connection is causing a delay in displaying the graphic buttons.

Return/Cancel: JavaScript or HTML --  JavaScript is the default selection. Changing this will not visibly change the Return or Cancel buttons, nor will it impact your ability to perform these functions. If your browser's caching function is not working properly, you will receive an error message, "This page 'cannot be displayed," while you are navigating within WSD. If you receive this message, you should change from JavaScript to HTML.

Show: Menus and/or Toolbar  --  WSD allows you to hide or show two of the selection bars located at the top of Explorer Navigation function screens when the Explorer Masthead is selected.

  • Menu Bar - The four drop-down lists on this bar (File, View, Tools and Help) allow you to select functions via text drop-down lists. These lists include the same functions as those provided by icons on the Tool Bar and Function Bar.
  • Tool Bar - This bar provides icon selections for access to your User Preferences, Submit New Request (to the default submission stage), Administration screens, Help screens and Tutorials.

To Show these tool bars, select the radio button for Menus and/or Toolbar. To Hide, deselect the applicable radio button.

You may also Show and Hide these tool bars on the Application Desktop or function screens by selecting the “Hide”  or “Unhide”  icon on the left side of each Bar. Tool bar changes made on these screens will be saved as your User Interface Preference and displayed accordingly the next time you access your User Preferences screen.

The Function Bar (displayed under the Menu and Tool Bar) provides icon access to function screens. Changes to this tool bar are not available via the User Preferences screen. You may Show or Hide this bar using the Show/Hide icon on the left side of the bar.

Screen Colors  --  You may customize the screen colors for the various parts of the Explorer Navigation screens when Menus is set to Java. To change the colors for each section of your screen, click the applicable section (Masthead Background, Menu/Toolbar Background, Field Background, Error Windows, Screen Background) to display the Screen Colors Palette. Select the color for the section by either typing the Color Code in the data entry area, or by clicking on the color in the palette. Then click Save.

Save User Preferences Changes  --  After you have completed all of your User Interface changes, you must click the Save Preferences button at the top of the User Preferences screen in order for them to be saved to your Preferences.

  • When "Preferences Saved" displays, click OK to return to the Application Desktop or function screen from which you accessed User Preferences.

Note: If you are using the WSD Multiple Windows option, only the screen from which you accessed User Preferences will reflect the changes you just made. You must do a Refresh to apply these changes to any other screens that may be displayed.
