HOW TO CREATE/EDIT A PAGE LAYOUT TEMPLATE

WebSite Director (WSD) Page Layout Templates allow users with no knowledge of HTML to populate web pages that have a pre-defined format.  These templates allow you to specify which portions of a document can be created/edited.

Published pages will be comprised of the HTML code defined by the template designer/developer and the content that the user enters into the specified template areas.  Page Layout Templates can contain any WSD Template Language elements plus HTML, XML, and Dynamic Server-specific variables that are compatible with the installed environment.

The method you use to add and maintain templates for your site depends on the "Modify Templates" setting on the System Policies screen, as follows:

  • System Admin - the System Administrator can create/revise templates immediately via the Maintain Templates screen.
  • Submit Request -  template changes must be made through the Submit New Request function available from the WSD Application Desktop page and the Edit Request screen accessed from a workflow stage.
  • Both - you may use either method to add and maintain templates, depending on your permissions.
Warning: If you implement this policy for your web site, you will not have version history for any templates modified using the "System Admin" method!

When a template is modified, it can be immediately applied to all applicable documents via the Apply Template function accessed from the System Administration screen. See Apply Template

  • If a field has been added to the template, it will appear empty on the published page, or it will contain any default data.
  • If a field has been deleted, the old data is thrown away.

Using Header and Footer Templates with Page Layout Templates

Page Layout Template designers can specify which/whether Header and Footer Templates are to be automatically assigned to documents created using Page Layout Templates. This is accomplished by declaring one or more "SetProperty" commands as the first line(s) of the Page Layout Template. In addition to declaring  Headers and Footers, template designers can use "SetProperty" commands to pre-set any valid document property such as author, title, description, etc.

All properties declared by a "SetProperty" command are automatically set when a Page Layout Template is used to create a new document.  Although "SetProperty" commands can be located anywhere within a Page Layout Template, we recommend placing them at the beginning of the Page Layout Template for readability.

The format of the SetProperty command is:

           SetProperty <property>=<value>

When "<value" contains multiple words  as when defining a document description - it must be enclosed within quotes.  Example:

SetProperty Description="This  is a document description"
See Template Language for a list of valid "SetProperty" commands. Note: While "SetProperty" can reference any valid WSD 2.0 property, certain properties (like "requestid", "type", etc.) are ignored since they are determined by actions outside of Page Layout Template processing.

Example of assigning Header and Footer Templates:

SetProperty header=sample.header
SetProperty footer =sample.footer
